Emma Reynaud founded the French label in 2018 and has used the sustainable fabric ECONYL from inception. ECONYL is a newer invention that helps solve our issues with synthetic waste such as industrial plastic, waste fabric, and fishing nets from oceans. The process turns this waste into regenerated nylon fabrics and uses less water and produces less waste than the traditional nylon production process. Yes “clean” beauty is a buzzword and yes there is no clear definition of the term from a regulated source, but we’ve read and studied some disturbing enough facts to understand that this buzzy movement is important enough to be on your radar for the long run.

We are all aware of the benefits of clean eating- avoiding anything highly processed and sticking to natural whole and plant-based foods. So if filling your body with the good stuff makes sense, then slathering your skin with similarly good ingredients should as well. Clean beauty in our eyes is skincare and cosmetic products from transparent brands that have tested and created their products with the safety of people and the planet in mind. Think plant-based ingredients from brands that track farming and sourcing and products free of nasty chemicals like parabens, formaldehyde, and asbestos. Your skin is the largest organ on your body and through dermal absorption, chemicals can find their way from the outer surface of your skin both into your skin and into your body. 
 
But what about government regulations? Surely these nasty and sometimes lethal ingredients can’t find their way into our makeup? Well, the FDA states that neither the law nor FDA regulations require specific tests to demonstrate the safety of individual products or ingredients nor do they require companies to share their safety information. This means we are relying purely on the integrity of companies to deem what is safe for people and our planet and put their products through testing. The only real rule of thumb is that products cannot contain any of the restricted chemicals that the FDA has banned. Few! But wait, the FDA lists a whopping 11 restricted chemicals in comparison to 1,300 chemicals outlawed by the European Union.

## What To Look Out For When Buying Clean Skincare & Cosmetics
As we mentioned earlier, there is no real definition or standards to what is classified as “clean” but transparent brands will usually rely on third-party certifications like USDA Organic, ECOCERT, EWG Certification, and Leaping Bunny. You can read more into the different certifications [here](https://ofearthandbeauty.com/understanding-third-party-verifications-for-clean-beauty-products-and-brands/) and when shopping, look for the emblems on product packaging or descriptions. 
While not every clean product needs to be 100%  plant-based or 100% natural it’s good to understand what ingredients (both natural and chemical) should be avoided. Here is a breakdown of 5 offenders to be wary of.
 
### **Parabens**
Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as artificial preservatives in cosmetic and body care products since the 1920s. You can find them widely in leave-on wash-off products such as shampoo, conditioners, and face washes. Scientific studies suggest that parabens can disrupt hormones in the body and harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer. They have also recently been linked to early onset of puberty in girls and gestational diabetes in pregnant women.
 
### **Formaldehyde**
Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and while banned in the European Union, it can still be found in the US commonly in hair-straightening treatments and nail polish. While many brands claim to be formaldehyde-free, there are many cases where they are still ridden with chemicals from the same family such as methylene glycol, formalin, methanal, and methanethiol. All of which release the carcinogenic compound when mixed with water during the treatment.
 
### **Talc**
Talc is a natural mineral and because of its softness and water absorbency, it has been used in cosmetics and skin care for centuries. It has been proven that when unpurified, the mineral can contain traces of asbestos which is a known carcinogen. When it comes to makeup, there is also the issue that when inhaled on a daily basis, the talc can cause respiratory problems and lung disease.
 
### **Palm Oil** 
Palm oil has become such a common household ingredient found in everything from foods to our shampoos. While the natural oil itself is not harmful to our skin, it’s the mass sourcing that has unfortunately caused havoc to our planet. In order to build enough palm oil plantations to keep up with the consumer demand, rain forests are often cleared causing deforestation and loss of animal habitats. The World Wildlife Fund states that 300 football fields of space are cleared each hour for palm oil production, with orangutans and Sumatran tigers at risk of extinction.

### **Hydroquinone**
Hydroquinone is another chemical that is widely banned across the globe but not in the US. While the FDA proposed a ban in 2006 based on the findings that the chemical acted as a carcinogen in rodents, the chemical can still be found commonly in skin brightening or lightening products. Hydroquinone can be purchased in a lower two percent concentration over the counter, but stronger formulas are available by prescription. It has been linked to certain cancers, decreased immune response, abnormal function of the adrenal gland, and a skin condition known as ochronosis.

Like every other skincare or cosmetic product, it will take some trial and error to find the right products that work for your skin type. So while clean beauty, unfortunately, isn’t a golden ticket for that glass skin look, it will attain you and the planet positive results in the long run. Do your homework and read your labels before making your next purchase.

**Deadstock fabrics have been an amazing source of inspiration and sustainable resource for designers of late.  But what is deadstock fabric?**

It’s leftover fabric from other fashion houses or fabrication mills who overestimated their needs. Traditionally, brands would hold on to excess fabrics for a few seasons and then send them to the landfills. By selling and repurposing these fabrics, designers are able to purchase limited quantity textiles that would have otherwise been waste and produce limited edition styles.

## Neada Deters, LESSE Founder

**On career journey and dealing with challenges that the past year has brought**

I have had a somewhat long and winding career trajectory, especially for my age. I was born and raised in Sydney, and my family will tell you that I have always— since day one —challenged why and how things are done. It can be a divisive quality and is often misinterpreted, but it just comes from a natural curiosity and desire to learn. After university, I moved to New York. I had never been to the US and only knew two people—but somehow I landed a job at VICE. From that job, I moved into fashion and, eventually, working as an editor. Working editorial, I covered fashion and, among other things, beauty.
 
Through this work, I became particularly interested in skincare. I had developed cystic acne and extremely sensitized skin since I moved to New York, and my family also has a history of skin cancer—so I truly can't remember a day in my life when I haven't applied sunscreen. For me, skin has always been a health issue. The issue I had personally faced with the industry, was how impossible it was to navigate. I could never find natural products that were effective, and with overwhelming choice I barely knew where to start. But I knew from my research and from interviews with some of the world's leading skin experts that just a few simple products was truly the best approach to skincare, and it was possible to achieve real results with botanical ingredients. I decided to start creating my own, and a few years later I launched [LESSE](https://lesseofficial.com/).
 
Our primary focus is and always will be on creating essential and effective products. Through and beyond these products, we're changing the way people think about organic skincare. First, consider how the products you use are made—are they truly safe for you, for the planet; were they made ethically and sustainably? We make very few products and only develop 1 - 2 new ones per year. Beauty is an extremely wasteful industry with a big environmental footprint, and we're taking an anti-industry route in saying that you actually need less. The most sustainable thing any of us can do: buy and use less. I'm also half Filipina and some of the challenges I faced with my skin— such as hyperpigmentation —are not "mainstream" concerns reflected in the majority of skincare lines. In my teens and twenties, I never felt reflected or cared for by the industry and that's also crucial to me: that LESSE represents beauty in multitudes. 
 
This past year has been a challenging shift, from the perspective of moving everything to digital. Trying to find new ways to connect with and grow our community. But it's also meant that we now have more of a global LESSE community. Rather than just investing in Los Angeles, where we're based, and New York, where I usually spend quite a lot of time; we have had the bandwidth to have real conversations with community members from anywhere and everywhere. It's also put things into perspective for all of us, and I believe it's now clearer than ever that companies can't just toe the line on social, political, and environmental issues. There is no neutral in this new world. Though the road to recovery and true systemic change is still a long one, there have been revealing moments over the past year that have not just woken us up as individuals—but as companies who often have a larger economic impact and can influence or make bigger strides towards this necessary change.

**Tips for living a more sustainable life**

Sustainability is something that should progress over time, every day. If we can all make more sustainable choices today than we did yesterday, and incrementally live more considered lives, we can make a significant personal impact. I really shop very little and, when I do, I shop vintage where possible. Most of our groceries are from the farmers market, and my car is always stocked with reusable bags, camping cutlery (if I order takeaway food), and I carry a reusable water bottle with me everywhere. As far as beauty, I think about the packaging material and I use reusable cotton pads, bamboo tools, etc. I also try to walk as much as I can. Los Angeles is such a car-oriented city but we pick walkable areas to live so we can minimize how much we drive. My next step is going to be growing some of my own food, starting this spring.

I began my journey in the fashion industry at the age of 17 and worked mainly as a visual merchandiser for luxury fashion brands, due to the pandemic I lost my job but had the chance to retrain as a UX Designer. When it feels like everything is falling apart there is usually a door opening up, a new opportunity, a new path to pursue.
 
As someone who is born in the capital of Ghana, I am appalled by the global north’s massive textile waste that passes through Accra’s Kantamanto market each week. Being frustrated about the way we consume fashion in the Western world nowadays I’ve been seeking a more sustainable alternative. With [Wardrobe Affaire](https://www.wardrobeaffaire.com/waitlist), a soon-to-be luxury fashion renting platform- or as we call it “dating platform for your wardrobe” - we can all share our rarely worn pieces and make use of what has already been made to oppose the production of waste. 

**Tips for living a more sustainable life**

At home, I switched to soap bars to reduce single-use plastic and recommend vintage furniture. Whenever I’m on the hunt for new clothing I avoid buying synthetic fabrics as much as possible and generally choose pre-owned and vintage over new. When it comes to online shopping I at least take a night to think about whether I want it and decide after a couple of days. Often I forget about it and if not I know that I really want it.

I have been a makeup artist for over 20 years, but my career journey has been varied and winding. I work in different mediums and the past year has been challenging because obviously, my job involves a lot of close contact. As part of CBU - We used a lot of last year to develop the ideas for CBU that we are slowly rolling out now.

As a co-founder of [Conscious Beauty Union](https://www.consciousbeautyunion.com), our aim is to make an impact by inspiring Makeup artists and Beauty Professionals to develop a more sustainable work practice that works for them. There is no one-size-fits-all - we all work in different places and industries, and part of sustainability is personal sustainability, the ability to work and contribute while supporting oneself. The information we share is also relevant to the personal life of the beauty professionals and further impact of the knowledge they gain can be applied through different parts of their life and work.

As a freelancer, this is just one more bump in a bumpy road. The key is getting back up and keeping on, adapting, and finding ways to communicate and work in a way that adapts to the times. Sometimes those adaptations, like a move to online gatherings, have meant it more possible to reach a wider group of people who would not be able to attend in-person events.  Times are still hard for everyone and there has not been a consistent return to work for many beauty pros, but our goal is also to create.

**Tips for living a more sustainable life**

My most important tip is to use up what you have, and buy what you need when you need it. For beauty items, it is important to think before buying. Opting to purchase from companies with deeper rooted values and ethics feeds into a larger ecosystem of companies trying to do good, not just cajole the consumer into buying a trend.

**On career journey and dealing with challenges that the past year has brought**
Hi, my name is Áine and I am a model, organizer, and the co-founder of the Model Activist Community. The Model Activist Community, aka the Model Mafia, is a global community of 400 fashion models who work together to make the fashion industry and world more sustainable, just, and equitable.

Cameron Russell and I co-founded the community in Dec 2016. We wanted to kick-off a powerful, model-led movement that could transform the industry from the inside out, utilise our unique access to media, and alleviate the feelings of isolation that models often feel by creating a non-competitive, supportive space for us to meet.

Since then, we have walked in sustainable fashion shows at the UN, marched in multiple climate marches, spearheaded the #MeToo movement in the fashion industry, raised funds for Hurricane Harvey and the indigenous communities on the frontline of climate change, held clothing swaps, panels and much more.

The least visible, but the most important work we have done has been in building trust and relationships within our community. Because of this, we were able to create our Model Mafia Covid Relief Fund. This fund was a pot for our most vulnerable members to get financial help from and it was powered by our members who are in more fortunate situations. We were able to help those in really precarious situations and it has been so beautiful to see us actively creating the world that we want to see. 

This year, I made a commitment to give to myself more. So, if I'm feeling sad or stressed, I do my best to notice it and find a way to feel more held. Since I'm in the UK in lockdown and the pandemic has been going on for so long, I haven't really seen my friends or family, so being more mindful of giving myself the support I don't get from regular interaction has been important. It might be taking a break for a quick meditation, going outside, dancing in my bedroom, or calling a friend.

**Tips for living a more sustainable life**

I haven't bought any clothes in a whole year and it feels good! Sure, I've been mostly at home, but knowing I'm not contributing to consumption in that way right now is awesome.  I really try to buy plastic-free. There is a farmer's market that I go to every weekend and that saves me from buying anything in plastic. I also get to support local farms. Two other easy, but important things to do are switching to renewable energy and banking with an ethical bank so that your money doesn't go into funding fossil fuels.

We do love a good vegan leather product and we also love the Earth, so it's cringeworthy to know that the majority of vegan leather items on the market are made entirely from synthetic materials such as PVC and polyurethane. This means heavy on chemicals, toxins, the use of finite fossil fuels during manufacturing, as well a big waste issue because the majority cannot be recycled or biodegraded. 

Thankfully with innovation pushing materials forward, plant-based leathers are being used more and more as a more sustainable leather alternative that is kinder on Earth. Here's a roundup of 5 materials to watch for.

### **1. Cactus Leather**
Desserto® had created an amazing leather alternative made from the mature leaves of the Nopal cactus. Cactus is a natural carbon sink with a great CO2 sequestering capacity and naturally regenerates the soil. While grape leather must be mixed with other materials such as organic cotton and synthetics in order to improve its durability, it is a great solution to the waste created by winemaking. Italian biomaterial startup VEGEA uses discarded grape skins from wine waste, vegetal oils, and natural fibers from agriculture.

The fashion industry accounts for 10% of all global carbon emissions. That’s more than the maritime and the shipping industries combined and according to statistics from UNEP, if the industry continues as is this rate will jump to 50% by 2030. With many fast fashion brands feeding our addiction to overconsumption and cheap products, the industry as a whole is now being hit with the much-needed pressure to make impactful changes to their supply chain in order to reduce their environmental impact. 

But imagine this, what if brands did more than just reduce their environmental impact? What if they could actually give back to replenish Mother Earth? This is where regenerative agriculture comes into play. The new, old practice has been slowly seeping through the food and fashion industry for the better, and for those who want a little regenerative agriculture 101, we highly recommend watching the documentary “Kiss the Ground”, narrated by Woody Harrelson.

So what exactly is regenerative agriculture? It’s a system of farming practices and principles that mimic Mother Earth’s natural process, encouraging the land to thrive in its most natural form, relying on ecological processes and cycles instead of human input. Imagine all of the farms you’ve seen with acres of overgrazed bare soil or rows of single crops which are stripped barren when out of season. This isn’t how our land would look in its natural form and in this state, can’t effectively absorb carbon. With regenerative agriculture, farms would look the complete opposite with lush fields always covered with sprouts, animals grazing more freely, and an abundance of diverse crops. This technique puts a focus on soil health by utilizing the power of photosynthesis in plants to draw down atmospheric carbon dioxide back into the Earth and therefore helping reverse our climate crisis.

"Agriculture really represents the best chance that we have of mitigating and ending the climate crisis," said Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario at the National Retail Federation in January. "The science is saying that if we converted all industrialized agriculture to regenerative, organic practices, we could sequester all the world's carbon."

For the fashion brands that have a budget for sustainability, regenerative agriculture really should be considered. While time-consuming, taking years to be regenerative, and costly to invest in these farms, the environmental benefits should really be enough for those bigger brands to take a leap towards giving back to the Earth, what already has been taken,

Traveling With A Seasonless Wardrobe with Rocío Pérez

 You’re here because you’ve noticed that sustainable fashion pieces can be really expensive.
There’s no denying it, but sustainable items are justified in their price tags. If you want to learn about why
that is, read this. Shopping sustainably is hard. It takes thought, effort, time, and a lot of consideration. As
consumers, we aren’t used to that. Shopping is one of those tedious tasks we add to our busy schedules.
That mentality is a symptom of our global, capitalist marketplace. We’re used to having whatever we
want, whenever, and at the lowest possible price. While there isn’t much we can do to change such deeply
embedded global structures, we do have the power to change our own philosophy on shopping, or even
create a philosophy and moral code around shopping. Here are three things to consider that will help you
shop sustainably in a way that won’t break the bank. 


## 1. Change your philosophy on shopping, or create one where there wasn’t one before

Yes, purchasing consciously takes effort, and it should. Sustainable shopping has to be perceived as a
revolutionary effort. It’s revolutionary in the sense that we are restructuring how we think about how we
spend our money. It shouldn’t be thoughtless. There is too much at stake, such as the people and their
conditions involved in making a garment, the environment, and the toxic materials and emissions used to
make a garment. What does conscious purchasing look like? With help from the Status Gaea business

Another mental shift you can make about purchasing is recognizing the fact that if you replaced your monthly fast fashion shopping hauls with once-a-year, sustainable options, you would potentially be spending the same amount of money on clothes per year. The sheer amount of throw-away items packing our closets is unnecessary. Replace those items with classic staples that are sustainable and versatile. You’ll have fewer items, create more creative ways to wear each item, and the items will last longer if they are truly sustainable pieces.

## 3. Be critical of trends

This is a hot take because you love fashion, and therefore, you love certain trends and the ever-evolving
fashion world. Some trends truly are great, and it’s okay to indulge in trends when you love them but
consider purchasing styles that seem more classic and long-lasting. If you stick to what is flattering for
you, what you like, and what you want to wear, you’ll look more original, and it will also open up more
opportunities to shop second-hand for one-of-a-kind items (which also happen to be more sustainable).
Trends are how the fashion industry keeps us interested and purchasing more goods. For passing trends,
clothing rental is a perfect solution for those trends you are dying to try out.
Sustainable fashion and lifestyle, in general, is an imperfect journey for those pursuing it. Start small, you
don’t have to drain your bank account, be conscious of the power you have, and learn to enjoy the
process.
